The USTA is the national governing body for the sport of tennis in the United States and is a not-for-profit organization with more than 675,000 members. It owns and operates the US Open and selects the teams for the Davis Cup, Fed Cup and the Olympics and Paralympic Games. It owns and operates the US Open, the largest annually attended sporting event in the world and, in 2004, launched the US Open Series which links 10 summer tournaments to the US Open. It invests 100% of its proceeds to promote and develop the growth of tennis, from the grassroots to the professional levels.
The USTA, which encompasses all 50 states, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, American Samoa and Guam, is composed of 17 geographical sections. Most sections are further divided into districts. Every section maintains its own staff to administer USTA programs, establishes its own tournament schedule and issues its own rankings.
National coordination and administration of the USTA’s efforts is effected by the full-time staff at the national
headquarters in White Plains, N.Y., the USTA National Tennis Center
in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park, N.Y., and the USA Tennis High
Performance headquarters in Key Biscayne, Fla.
